Pokemon Sun & Moon Starters Revealed!
Five days ago the official Pokemon channel posted a video with the first peek at the seventh generation of starters, the new region, and the box legendaries!
As a Pokemon fan since 1999 and still obsessed today, I’m pretty excited for the next installment.
The new starters have great design (yes even Popplio the water type). Rowlet is just too damn cute for his own good, Litten is a cat and therefore universally loved, and Popplio is a lovable looking goof.
Speculations on their final evolutions have been a hot topic online as with any new generation; so here’s my take on it.
- Rowlet will stay a Grass-Flying type, because the only other generation to have a multi-typed starter was Gen. 1 with Bulbasaur who was Grass-Poison and stayed that way. Visually, I know this is far-fetched, but, I think he’ll look like a large owl with plant/flower motifs in his mid/final forms.
- Siding with my Gen. 1 type theory I believe Popplio will stay mono-Water type through his evolution line. While he does look like a circus clown seal, it makes me think he could gain fairy typing somewhere along the way because of how whimsical and goofy he is. As for what he may look like in his third form, just remember how much everyone laughed at Oshawott…
- And finally Litten. The fire type has always been a fan favorite, and making him/her a cat is just unfair. Again, i’m holding fast to my Gen 1 theory in that Litten will stay Mono-fire until their final form, where I hope we don’t end up with a Judo-master anthro-cat. His black fur lends itself to a possibility of dark typing, but I think Litten’s final form will be the wild card of the bunch. Part of me just wants to see Litten turn into a majestic flame-tiger, but who am I kidding, his third form will be on two legs.
Diving deeper into the reveal trailer we also got to see a glimpse at the Alola region, and the Sun & Moon covert art legendaries. The Alola region is a clever play on Aloha (ha-ha-ha..) and geographically resembles Hawaii. We can expect a vibrant tropical atmosphere and some new exotic Pokemon! All Pokemon regions have been based off real life locations and with the recent increase in graphics quality, Pokemon games have been able to accommodate for, this next installment looks less like a Pokemon handheld game and more like i’m playing a full on TV-console game.
Now what I’ve really been wanting to rave about, the legendaries.
Sun version features a mighty lion, majestic as ever and undoubtedly harnessing the power of the sun in his beautiful mane and forehead-visor thing. I expect it to at least be a fire type, and perhaps the same size as his Johto cousin, Entei
But more importantly, the moon version legendary… is… a … BAT! Look at those majestic wings! That sly, smug grin! yes my favorite Pokemon are Crobat and Swoobat! What about it??? *ahem* My guess is that it’ll be Flying-Fairy, since fairy types are closely associated with the moon (Moonblast, anyone?).
As with every new generation reveal, it’s an exciting time to be a Pokemon fan, especially since it’s the 20th anniversary of the franchise. As more updates and reveals for the series arise, expect more opinion pieces — cheers!
